York School Board Approves 2012 Budget

The York County School Board approved its $116 million budget for fiscal year 2012 at its Monday meeting.

The board will request level funding from the county Board of Supervisors. The board has already indicated it plans to reduce school funding by $337,000. If that happens, the school board will have to revisit its budget.

The $116 million budget incorporates a $1.2 million step pay increase for eligible licensed and non-licensed employees. That raise was made possible when the division received an unexpected $700,444 in state funding. The division will also save $569,718 originally budgeted for contributions to the Virginia Retirement System.

The budget eliminates 15 positions tied to enrollment losses of 190 students, and trims the budgets for textbooks and bus replacements. It also incorporates that addition of six Special Education teachers to meet demand.

Although the division received more state funding than expected, board member Barbara Haywood noted the state’s schools have suffered from cuts. “What wonderful things we could do if we maintain level funding locally,” she said.

although i agree that money should be spent more wisely and salaries (all the way up to include supervisory level, not just the teachers) should be accurately evaluated. one should consider though that the average teacher, after working to receive tenure, still makes "enough" to qualify for WIC and other government income based programs...thou gh to consider when criticizing the "greedy" teachers...

So we get a little extra money from the state and we just have to spend it on salary increases. So next year when we don't get money from the state these same employees are going to expect the same amount of pay. Where is it going to come from? Thats right kids it comes from mommy and daddys pocket, so don't expect any internet access next year at home because we wont be able to pay for it along with your cell phone.

BoS responded to request last year from the School Superintendent, not the School Board, to increase funding $600K, now the School Board wants to maintain 1/2 of that one time increase and calls it "level funding". School Board gets nearly $60M from State and $60M from County. Once BoS pays for law enforcement and fire services, the County budget is 1/4 the Schools. The School Board can esily find $337K in their $116M budget. Quit whining, just do it.
