Supes Pick Redistricting Committee MembersWednesday, March 23, 2011 Tuesday night, James City County Supervisors each chose members to serve on a citizen redistricting committee to help redraw political boundaries in the county. Now that new census data is out, the county needs to get cracking on redrawing district lines in order to ensure each one has roughly the same population. The county is under a tight deadline, as they need to have the process complete by mid May.Tuesday evening, supervisors decided to select a ten-person citizen redistricting committee to take on the project (as they have in the past), and they announced two appointments each for the group. The committee, which will have a representative from the planning department, the county attorney and the local registrar on hand to help them, will have until April 12 to redraw district boundaries and present their recommendation. A public hearing and vote is expected around April 26. Supervisor Jim Kennedy chose Josh Mayes and county Republican Committee Chairman Amanda Johnston. Supervisor Bruce Goodson chose Paul Gerhardt, an attorney with Kaufman and Canoles who sits on the county’s Economic Development Authority; and Jeff Ryer, a member of the county’s Republican Committee who has worked on several local political campaigns including Goodson’s. Supervisor John McGlennon chose Jennifer Tierney, a member of the county’s Democratic Committee and founder of a San Diego-based political and public affairs consulting firm who is President of the Youth Harp Society. He also chose former state Social Services Commissioner and former James City County Community Services Director Anthony Conyers. Supervisor Jim Icenhour chose David Jarman, member of the James City County Citizens’ Coalition and member of the James City County Budget Advisory Committee who makes regular budget recommendations to the WJCC school board. He also chose former planning commissioner Debbie Kratter, who was voted out of her position last year by Republican Board members. Finally, Chairman Mary Jones chose Heather Cordasco, an executive committee member with the county’s Republican Committee who last year made an unsuccessful bid for a WJCC school board seat. She also chose former planning commissioner Jay Everson. |
