Sen. Mark Warner will deliver the commencement address at William and Mary Law School’s graduation ceremony on May 15. Warner served as Virginia’s governor from 2002 to 2006 and was elected to the Senate in 2008.

The Law School will have its graduation ceremony at 2:30 p.m. at the Lake Matoaka Ampitheatre. Degrees will be awarded to approximately 220 students and seating will be limited to graduates and their guests.

Student Bar Association President Tamar Jones, class of 2011, said her classmates were honored that Warner accepted their invitation. “Mark Warner’s commitment to public service as a governor and senator is inspiring,” she said. “He is a wonderful example to graduates of how you can use your legal education to serve the greater good of the community, state and nation.”

Warner serves on several Senate committees, including the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs and the Committee on the Budget. He recently helped recruit technology companies to work pro bono on a project to modernize Arlington National Cemetery’s record-keeping system. He was a co-found of Nextel, a cell phone company, early in his career. Warner graduated from George Washington University and Harvard Law School.

Warner visited the Law School in November for its Veterans Day ceremony celebrating the naming of the Law School’s Lewis B. Puller, Jr. Veterans Benefits Clinic.
