WM Professor Talks Animal Friendships On TV

WMBarbaraKing
Professor Barbara King will appear on "Sunday Morning."
People love unlikely pairs, from “The Odd Couple” to “Regis and Kelly.” That love extends to funny animal friendships, from hippos and tortoises to elephants and dogs.

The College of William and Mary’s Barbara King, the chancellor professor of anthropology, will appear on CBS News’ “Sunday Morning” broadcast this Sunday to talk about fascinating animal friendships. She was interviewed by correspondent Steve Hartman in New York City.

They talked about Owen, a hippo whose best friend is Mzee, a tortoise. They also discussed an elephant who hangs out with a dog and an orangutan named Suriya whose favorite pal is a hound dog named Roscoe.

It was a whirlwind trip for King, who was flown to New York for the interview and returned home the same day. “I’ll appear on-air only briefly, but even so, it was hugely fun,” she said. Her segment was filmed in the interior of the Hotel Pierre and outdoors near Central Park.

King is the author of several books, including “Being With Animals,” an anthropological exploration of the evolution of humans’ relationship with animals.

“Sunday Morning,” hosted by Charles Osgood, airs at 9 a.m. Sunday on CBS.
