Reduced Service on Jamestown-Scotland FerryBy WYDaily Staff Monday, April 11, 2011 Virginia Department of Transportation crews have reduced service on the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry to perform emergency maintenance on one boat within the fleet, the Surry.VDOT removed the Surry from the fleet Sunday night after an unexpected mechanical malfunction. The Pocahontas and Virginia vessels will continue to ferry motorists across the James River using the normal ferry schedule. Crews expect the Surry back in service by mid-week. Operations will be diminished by 25 vehicle an hour while the vessel is being repaired. In the meantime, motorists who rely on the ferry should allow for extra time to make the crossing or consider using the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel, the James River Bridge or the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Bridge. Motorists are encouraged to visit VDOT's 511 Virginia website, call 511, listen to Highway Advisory Radio 610 AM or call the Traffic Information Line at 757-361-3016 for current traffic and travel information. The ferry hotline is available 24 hours a day by calling 1-800-VAFERRY. |
