Three armed men robbed the Chesapeake Bank at 1229 Lafayette Street Tuesday afternoon around 3:30.

Williamsburg police said the suspects entered the bank together displaying weapons as they demanded money. A limited description was available: All three were black, wore hooded jackets, masks and gloves. Police were working to provide surveillance photos of the crime.

The trio of suspects fled the area on foot and are believed to have left the area in a maroon-colored vehicle. The bank is located on Lafayette, near the busy intersection of Richmond Road and Monticello Avenue.

Please please please tell me that you are not serious. If you honestly think banks WANT to get robbed, you are absolutely out of your mind! Yes, employees of financial institutions accept there is always a risk of robbery, just like there is potential for disaster in MOST professions. A sign on the door may deter a bad check passer or forger, but highly unlikely that it stops criminals of this caliber. Like your mother always said, think before you speak-even electronically. Remember that there are real people involved in this situation. It may be easy for you to pass judgement on the actions of the employees, but I'd guess you've never been in this situation. Let me know how "sir, please remove your hat" works out.

Burger, I sincerely hope that your comment was not meant to be taken seriously. Banks are always concerned with the threat of robbery, not just regarding loss of money but also the safety of employees. Furthermore, it is common knowledge that you should not wear anything to obstruct the view of your face into a bank. Whether or not a sign is posted, if patrons or a passersby observe men in ski masks entering a bank, they immediately know what is about to transpire. Getting back to your comment, do you think that the tellers should have politely asked these weapon-bearing criminals to please remove their masks? I think not. It boils down to this; if they want to rob you, they will rob you. When all banks implement the 2 door entry system of England you rave about and keep you separated by a barrier of bullet-proof class, please do not complain about the cold atmosphere or lack of small-town customer service.

#3 "Burger." Your intelligent and savvy information is RIGHT ON TARGET!! You've brought out some GREAT solutions to a longtime, lingering, insipid and arcane approach to operating too many of our local banks in the way of safety and protection! Now it's time to "persuade" the banks to adapt to a successful system like the English! Call, stop by, w/o a hoodie or sunglasses, or write, politely, asking YOUR fave local bank to CHANGE their policy.... "Power to us!"

Apparently banks don't mind being robbed because they don't try hard enough to avoid it. One thing they could do is to have a sign on the front of the store stating NO HATS, HOODIES, SUNGLASSES OR HEADWEAR OF ANY KIND ALLOWED WHEN ENTERING THE BANK. Eventually when patrons, employees, or passerbys see someone with these items on going into or coming out of a bank, or in a bank, they will know something is up and can contact police. Another way is to have a 2 door entry system that only opens one door at a time. England has this and it works.

I would be willing to bet that each of these three individuals have a recent criminal record and are out on suspended sentences due to plea bargaining and overcrowded jails. This is a problem that is pervasive in our current legal system. Committing a violent crime no longer means adequate consequences and this not only keeps the public unsafe, it re-enforces criminal behavior.
