Update: JCC Officials Assessing Extent of Suspected Tornado Damage

At least one person has been injured after a suspected tornado touched down in James City County Saturday night. In Gloucester, emergency officials were reporting three had been killed and many homes flattened after a tornado touched down.

According to James City Fire Department spokesman Bob Ryalls, the Grove and Kingsmill area of James City County near Pocahontas Trail from Kingsmill to the Newport News city line was hit by a suspected tornado or microburst just before 7 p.m.

James City County fire and emergency management officials have been assessing damage and, as of 1 a.m. Sunday, had identified more than 25 damaged homes due to fallen trees or downed power lines. One resident was transported by ambulance ot Sentara Regional Hospital for a shoulder injury sustained in the storm.

James City County Fire Station #2 on Pocahontas Trail is currently being used as shelter for some 14 residents. The local chapter of the American Red Cross is on the scene to help displaced residents.

Ryalls said the department loaned generators to two citizens who required power to run medical equipment.

Power is out in many parts of the county; immediately after the storm more than 4,580 James City customers were without power. All area residents are urged to stay off the roads.

Some roads, like Pocahontas Trail from the Newport News city line to the Busch Gardens flyover, were completely blocked for several hours. Crews worked to reopen part of the stretch, but the section of Pocahontas Trail (Route 60 East) from Woodside Drive to the flyover remained closed overnight as crews worked to remove damaged trees and power lines that made travel unsafe.

Public safety officials conducted a "windshield" damage assessment of the Grove community Saturday night. They'll resume that assessment this morning to capture the extent of damage to homes and property caused during the storm.

There are reports of multiple power lines down, trees having crashed into several houses and mobile homes that have suffered significant damage.

Shelli,
Mother Earth has been devastated by our destructive behaviours! From excessive consumption of fossil fuels to the dumping of contaminants in her waters and on her surface, we have created the environments in which we live and breath.
It's Global Warming created by Local Contaminating.

Also, the present and past AGs of the Commonwealth [CooCooNelli and BobbyMac] don't BELIEVE IN Global Warming. They prefer to spend the $$$$ of the Commonwealth fabricating and disseminating their 'myths' and attacking the integrity of scientists.
Mother Earth does have an extremely HOT center. Perhaps these two guys should go there!

We can and must act now to change our behaviours to minimize our impact on Mother Earth. She is fragile and dependent upon our stewardship.

Join the effort to say NO COAL PLANT in Surry County and NO URANIUM MINING in Pittsylvania County. They are VISIBLE and VOCAL actions in the correct direction.

This is the non-existent climate change at work. Climate change discusses the altering of weather patterns due to changes in winds, logically leading to many abnormal changes in weather such as tornadoes and hurricanes. AKA Mother nature is pissed.
