McDonnell Responds to News of bin Laden's Death

Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement this morning following news that U.S. forces in Pakistan have killed Osama Bin Laden:

"This is a great and historic moment for America and the world. I applaud President Barack Obama, his Administration and the brave men and women of our military for this successful operation. The death of Osama Bin Laden brings final justice to the evil perpetrator of the attacks of 9/11. Justice has truly been served. While we celebrate this news, we must also remember that The War on Terror is not over. We cannot rest until our nation is secure, and all threats to our freedom and our people are eliminated.  On this day, and every day, we continue to remember those we lost on that tragic day in September 2001, the brave service men and women who have died defending our nation in the years following that attack, and the family and friends they have left behind. We will never forget."

U.S. military bases and government offices around the world were reported to be on heightened alert after President Barack Obama's televised announcement of bin Laden's death late Sunday night.

The U.S. State Department put embassies on alert and warned travelers of the greater chance of anti-American violence in the wake of bin Laden's death.

The worldwide travel alert said, in part: “Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, U.S. citizens in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations.”

CNN and the Associated Press were reporting early this morning that American forces had buried bin Laden's body at sea to prevent creation of a shrine to the al Qaeda leader.

The gov's announcement makes it sound as though we are 'stationed' in Pakistan, which we are NOT. This was only a raid into it !
Based on some of the snide remarks the "Tea-Trumpies" are still ad it.Give it a rest little children. Kindergarten is over and it's graduation day.

Lots of politicians have responded to the news. McDonnell's is actually one of the less venal of the lot.

What I find more interesting is the choice of this action of the governor to publicize.

An example of something with more impact on us, the Pilot this morning had an article that Virginia is going to turn down 2 million dollars from the federal government to help restore oyster beds in the bay.

One reason is that Virginia has no money for its portion of the match. Seems the state has been using oyster shells to match in the past and we're running out of oyster shells. That's what the Pilot says.

We got plenty of dollars to fund the movie office, but not enough oyster shells to help oysters recover.

It may have taken 10 years, and many american lives but our military finally got him. My only regret is that it took so long. America stands tall and strong in the world's fight against terrorism. But let us be vigilant. The muslim extremists will not let this go un-noticed. I'm doubl proud to be an American.41689

I CARE about what MY Virginia GOVERNOR thinks concerning this subject and any subject! And that's what counts for all of us intelligent and savvy Virginians!! Negativism is antequated and doesn't belong here, now!

To Mark T:
As Governor of Virginia, a state attacked on 9/11, it is altogether proper for our Governor to issue a comment. He speaks for the intelligent and thoughtful among us.

Does anyone really care what McConnell thinks on this issue. It is not one that he has competence in nor control over.
