Passenger Traffic Up at NN/Williamsburg AirportBy Amber Lester Kennedy Saturday, May 14, 2011 The Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport increased passenger traffic by 3.6 percent in April over the previous year. In April, 84,677 passengers traveled through the airport compared to 81,728 in April 2010. Traffic increased steadily every month in the first quarter of 2011 over the previous year, increasing 13.6 percent in January, 10 percent in February and 9 percent in March. From January to April 2011, the airport’s passengers increased by 23,941 passengers over the same period in 2010. Stephen Mallon, chairman of the Peninsula Airport Commission, attributed the growth to support from local businesses, the military and federal government workforce and leisure travelers. Both Frontier Airlines and Delta Air Lines have increased the size of their planes landing at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. On May 9, Frontier landed a 162-seat A320 at the airport, and Delta has upgraded its Newport News flights from 50 to 70-seat regional planes to 142-seat MD-88 jets. The airport is served by AirTran Airways, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines and US Airways with non-stop service to Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Denver, New York City, Orlando and Philadelphia. Support NN/Wmbg for success.
It beats getting caught in tunnel traffic trying to fly out of Norfolk. Certainly hope AirTran & Southwestern will expand at NN/Wmbg.
