Part of Quarterpath Road Remains Closed

City Council will consider the future of the unfinished portion of Quarterpath Road at its June 9 meeting.

The road, which was previously accessible only to vehicles with four-wheel drive, was roughly paved with recycled asphalt last week for the Run for the Dream Half Marathon.

While its condition is slightly improved, the city would like to get direction from council about its future before opening the road to vehicular traffic again; for now, it is closed.

Council has two main options: install a hard surface biking/walking trail, which was included in the last Comprehensive Plan; or reopen the road to traffic in its current condition. This section of the road is gravel-based, unlit and approximately 14-feet wide with a single-lane bridge at the mid-point.

The 2006 Comprehensive Plan proposed closing the center section of Quarterpath Road to through-traffic in favor of establishing a new street, Redoubt Road, to connect the land north to south. The plan also noted that the area in question was the site of the 1862 Peninsula Campaign and could be preserved by closing it to vehicular traffic.

A report and recommendation will be presented to council at its 2 p.m. meeting on June 9 in the Stryker Building.
