Fatal ATV Accident in York

A 14-year-old York County girl has died after apparently losing control of an ATV she was driving Monday evening on land adjacent to Waller Mill Park.

York County firefighter/paramedics and York-Poquoson Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m. Paramedics began CPR as soon as they located the girl in the dense woods.

While the land is located in York County, it is watershed property owned by the City of Williamsburg.

Members of the Williamsburg Fire Department responded shortly after York to assist with transporting the victim from the heavily wooded area where she was found. Police believe the victim, whom police did not name, was riding without a helmet when she was thrown from the ATV. The victim was evacuated from the area by medical helicopter to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Williamsburg Police spokesman Maj. Greg Riley said the incident occurred on trails that are not open to the public and are posted "No Trespassing." He said police are investigating the incident.

The cause of the death is pending the results of the Medical Examiner’s report.
