Continued Delays on Jamestown-Scotland Ferry System

Motorists who use the Jamestown-Scotland ferry should continue to expect travel delays through Thursday.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the ferry Pocahontas remains out of commission for emergency maintenance to its propulsion system. It was removed from service early Sunday after having been pulled earlier for emergency repairs, then returned to the water.

Also out of service is the Surry ferry, which has been temporarily removed for welding repairs to the ship's hull. Crews anticipate reinstating the Surry by morning rush hour Friday, to help reduce traffic delays.

Ferry capacity is diminished by approximately 50 vehicles an hour while the Pocahontas is being repaired. When the Surry vessel is placed back into service, operations will be diminished by approximately 25 vehicles during morning and evening rush hour trips.

Motorists should expect delays and may want to consider using the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, the James River Bridge (Route 17), or the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Bridge (Route 106/156).

Motorists may call the ferry hotline - 1-800-VAFERRY - 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for status updates.

Better safe then sorry. The Ferry personel don't like the delays anymore then the users. Be patient, tolerant and the rest will fall in place.

Ferry personnel have been working very hard to make the best of a bad situation. Their friendliness and spirits remain high.

Thanks for your hard work and our repeated safe passage.
