Progress Means Another Traffic Shift on Ft. Eustis Blvd.

The Virginia Department of Transportation has completed construction of two of the four new travel lanes on Fort Eustis Boulevard in Newport News and York County, and that means a traffic shift.

Today - Thursday, May 26 - after the morning peak travel period around 9 a.m., crews will shift all traffic onto the new travel lanes so construction can begin on the new eastbound lanes. The new westbound lanes will carry bi-directional traffic - that is, both east- and westbound - until early fall.

The previous traffic shift moved motorists from the existing westbound lane onto the newly constructed westbound lanes while eastbound traffic continued to utilize the eastbound lane, enabling crews to work in the median. Thursday’s traffic shift will move all traffic to the newly constructed lanes.

The Fort Eustis Boulevard Widening Project between Jefferson Avenue (Route 143) in Newport News and George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17) in York County has been underway since late 2009 and is scheduled for completion in spring 2012. Contractors will widen Fort Eustis Boulevard from two lanes to four. Also included will be a raised median, turn lane and modified traffic signals.
