Continued Delays on Jamestown-Scotland Ferry

Motorists can expect delays on the Jamestown-Scotland ferry for another week.

According to Virginia Department of Transportation spokesman Brooke Grow, the ferry Pocahontas remains out of service until the Newport News shipyard can get a part needed for repair and the crew can move the ferry into drydock. If repairs begin Wednesday, the ferry should be operational sometime next week, Grow says.

The ferry was pulled from service over a week ago for emergency propulsion system maintenance. “This is maintenance we need to perform to keep the ferry in working condition so we can have safe vessels for motorists,” according to Grow.

The Williamsburg and Virginia vessels are operating on the regular schedule, but ferry operations are still reduced by 50 vehicles an hour while the Pocahontas is being repaired.

VDOT suggests that motorists should continue to expect delays this week and may want to consider using the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, the James River Bridge (Route 17), or the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Bridge (Route 106/156).

Motorists may call the ferry hotline - 1-800-VAFERRY - 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for status updates.
