Free Job Training and GED at TNCC Triangle Campus

Thomas Nelson Community College's Middle College is now offering training in Williamsburg. This free program trains young adults who have not earned a high school diploma and are between 18-24 years old for an in-demand career as they earn their GED.

Classes are taught at TNCC’s Williamsburg campus at 4601 Opportunity Way. Available training includes Nurse Aide, Welding, HVAC, Medical Coding and Billing, Automotive, and more. The college is currently accepting applicants for the summer program at both the Williamsburg and the Hampton (600 Butler Farm Road) locations.

In less than eight weeks, students can earn their GED and enroll in college in this innovative initiative. Middle College is changing lives and changing communities by connecting young adults who have not completed high school with opportunities and employment training – all free of charge.

Since the program’s inception in 2009, TNCC has graduated several students and put them on the pathway to a rewarding career. For additional information, call Franz Albertini at 757-865-5882 or click here.

Without begrudging the chance these kids are being offered.. wouldn't it be nice to see this opportunity provided to average students from middle class families, who once again will not qualify because they worked twice as hard and DID graduate from high school.

Low-income, low-achieving students are always offered grants and scholarships to give them a leg-up, and those lucky enough to be from wealthy families only need help packing for college. But the middle class student with average grades will have to take out student loans to pay for this kind of training.

Why not offer this kind real employment training (they used to call it vocational training) in high school and perhaps then the students wouldn't drop out in the first place.

You are misinformed. Community Colleges in Virginia and Workforce Training pay off in spades for the Commonwealth and the taxpayers. For every dollar spent on Community College education and workforce training a net $2.50 is generated over ten years in increased tax revenue and economic activity.

It's great to hear there are opportunities for individuals tell make something of their life and to become contributing members of society. However, nothing in life is free, and if these fortunate recipients of this program don't pay for it, I'm sure I know who did!
