County Redisticting Plan Gets DOJ Pre-ClearanceFriday, June 24, 2011 Despite efforts by four citizens to stop the process based on allegations of adverse effects on minorities, the Department of Justice has pre-cleared James City County’s redistricting plan, which goes into effect immediately. The county submitted its redistricting plan at the end of April. Four citizens challenged the plan because they argued it diluted minority voting strength, and they asked the Department of Justice to stop the county from implementing the plan (read previous stories here and here). Representatives of the DOJ spoke to various county officials and citizens, and let the county know this week that its redistricting plan has received pre-clearance."This news confirms the excellent work done by the members of the Citizens Advisory Committee, who have had to endure unwarranted and unfair criticism," said Board of Supervisors Chairman Mary Jones. "It also confirms that the judgment of the Board's majority was sound in approving this plan, and that the complaints of those opposed to it were unfounded." According to a press release issued by the county registrar Friday, the plan, which goes into effect immediately, will affect over 85 percent of County voters through changes to either state Senate districts, state House of Delegates districts, local election districts or polling places. Residents can view adjusted precinct and polling place information online. Since part of the County has been redrawn into the 1st State Senate District, voters associated with the following adjusted precincts will vote on Tuesday, Aug. 23 in the Republican Party Primary Election: Berkeley A at Jamestown High School; Berkeley B at Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School; Berkeley C at Matoaka Elementary School; Jamestown C at Greensprings Chapel; Jamestown D at James City/Williamsburg Community Center; Powhatan A at Hornsby Middle School; Powhatan C at Toano Middle School; Stonehouse A at Crosswalk Community Church; Stonehouse B at Norge Elementary School; Stonehouse C at Stonehouse Elementary School; Roberts B at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church; and Roberts D at Rawls Byrd Elementary School. Residents associated with the following adjusted precincts will not be voting and the associated polling places will not be open for voting: Jamestown A at Legacy Hall; Jamestown B at James City/Williamsburg Community Center; Powhatan B at Lafayette High School; Powhatan D at Warhill High School; Roberts A at James River Elementary School; Roberts C at Grace Baptist Church. New Virginia Voter Identification Cards for voters in the 3rd State Senate District will be mailed during the first week of August. Voter ID cards for all other affected voters will be mailed at a later date but before their next election. Residents can verify that a current residence address is on file with the Voter Registrar by calling 253-6868. |

The citizen committee was not the target of the complaint rather the flawed process adopted by the Board and the misinformation provide by Board and staff to DOJ and the community.
If you are a registerd voter be sure that you get two notices of the new polling places by October. If you do not then you may not be on the registered voter list on election day. Call the registar office today. The number appears above.
You're right Patriot #1, the Board of Supervisors' decision to ratify the recommendation of the heavily partisan "Citizens' Advisory
Committee, and the error that stood when it was is another example of how the word of those in favor with those in office, is not questioned. That is the bitter truth about the current functioning of all levels of government, and those with considerable wealth now.
The advantage taken by officials, of those whose lives have been threatened and/or destroyed is infuriating for those who suffer prejudice and lack of normal brain function (idiots). I just saw a Judge in JCC/Williamsbur g court on Friday order the release to it's owner, an unjustifiably impounded car. The Sheriff's officers who stood in that courtroom have refused to release it until the Judge's decision reaches them in writing, on Monday. The car's owner called ahead of time to ask those diligent protectors of society if there could be any reason it wouldn't be released that day, if the Judge reached that favorable decision. The answer to that was "no". Yet a car which is the only means of transportation for a senior community member remains unavailable for her use, after it had been taken 3 weeks ago.
Now if it had been the release of someone of imposing position who
was erroneously imprisoned for a " white"collar crime, would taxpayers be expected to pay for 3 additional days of incarceration?
Life isn't fair....... we know that from childhood - yet does that have to be rubbed in, as it so often is? I'm sick of bullies at all stages of life who enjoy forcing their will on unfortunate others, no matter the reason. A deserted island seems really good to me right now.
I suppose we taxpayers would
