City Police Charge Two in SunTrust Bank Robbery

Williamsburg police have arrested two men they believe robbed the SunTrust bank in the 1100 block of Jamestown Road on June 21.

Portsmouth police stopped 35-year-old Maurice Jentell Williams, a Portsmouth resident, for an unrelated reason on June 22. According to city police, while in Portsmouth police custody Williams made statements that linked him to the crime, and later admitted to committing the robbery.

Williamsburg police obtained a warrant for Williams on Monday. He is being held at the Portsmouth Jail.

On Tuesday, Williamsburg Police Major Greg Riley said, city police obtained a second warrant, for 34-year-old Gary Clements Ridley, who lives in the 1400 block of Darren Drive in Portsmouth. Riley said investigators followed information that led to Ridley.

Both suspects have been charged with robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and conspiracy.

Williamsburg police say Williams and Ridley entered the bank a week ago Tuesday, indicated they were armed and took an undetermined amount of money. They then fled on foot through the Village Green subdivision.

Two people from Portsmouth came all the way up here to rob a bank!?

That was either a serious crime of opportunity or Williamsburg is viewed as an easy target.
