Local Business Owner Aims to Win Money for Returning TroopsBy Desiree Parker Saturday, July 09, 2011 The Cedars Bed and Breakfast in Williamsburg is aiming to win a $25,000 grant by getting enough votes in a national contest. An added perk is that several local businesses can also win smaller grants if enough votes are cast. Intuit, a management company for small and mid-sized businesses, is hosting a $1million “Love a Local Business” grant award contest. Votes from small business owners and fans act as raffle tickets for each business selected, so the more votes obtained, the more likely the business will walk away with $25,000. The two cities with the most businesses nominated will also each get $25,000 to be distributed among several nominees.Cedars owner Bob Tubbs says if he wins he’ll use the grant to offer romantic getaway packages for military guests who are returning home from deployment. "Many of our guests are military and we appreciate the sacrifices they make to preserve our way of life,” says Tubbs. “We hear their first hand personal stories weekly. When we heard of this grant, we immediately thought to use these funds to show our appreciation for their sacrifices." As of Friday evening, the Cedar’s was in third place nationally with 231 votes. “The response has been overwhelming and heartwarming,” Tubbs says. “ [My wife] Grace and I are thrilled and hope we get the chance to thank the many people who quietly and consistently work to keep us and our country safe and secure.” The current prize cycle for the year-long contest ends at the end of July. Intuit is also giving away $25,000 (to be divided into 10 $5,000 awards) in grants at the end of the month to the top two cities with the most small businesses nominated. Tubbs says he hopes many local residents and small business owners will vote for other local entrepreneurs. To vote for the Cedars or to nominate another business visit the Intuit contest website.
