JCC Republican Committee Calls for McGlennon to ResignBy Desiree Parker Friday, July 15, 2011 The James City County Republican Committee (JCCRC) said Wednesday they are calling on Supervisor John McGlennon to resign as Jamestown Supervisor effective January 1. McGlennon is running for the Roberts district seat in November. Should he lose, the JCCRC feels that he should “respect the verdict of the electorate” in Roberts by vacating the Jamestown seat. McGlennon says the idea is ridiculous.“Supervisor McGlennon can let the voters of James City know that he will respect their decision by making it clear before the election that he has no intention of remaining on the Board if he is defeated on November 8,” said JCCRC Chairman Amanda Johnston. The Committee recently passed a resolution calling for McGlennon’s resignation. The resolution highlights the county’s staggered term system, which will allow McGlennon to run in the Roberts District now that he has been moved there thanks to the recent redistricting process. If he loses the race, he can keep his seat in the Jamestown District until 2013, which the JCCRC resolution implies is unfair. “Unlike neighboring New Kent and York Counties, James City County elects its Board of Supervisors to staggered terms,” the resolution reads. “This practice allows McGlennon to run for the Roberts District seat, which is up for election this year, while occupying the Jamestown District seat, which is not up until 2013. Consequently, McGlennon can seek a new four-year term on the Board this year and continue to serve even if he is defeated by the voters at the polls.” “This resolution is more pathetic than the normal silly games of the James City County Republican Committee,” said McGlennon. “The voters of Jamestown District elected me to a four year term in 2009, and the GOP failed to even run a candidate against me. “I take my responsibility to the voters who elected me very seriously, and I'll continue to work for them as long as I can.” During the recent county redistricting process, both Democratic supervisors were drawn out of their districts. “I guess the Republicans have figured out that their manipulation of the redistricting process has unintentionally given voters the chance to change the direction of the Board of Supervisors, and they are panicking,” McGlennon said. |
