York Republican Supervisor Hopefuls to Debate

Seven out of the nine Republican candidates running for a seat on the Board of Supervisors in York County are debating this Thursday night, giving voters a chance to get to know the people who will be competing in the primaries on August 23.

Incumbents Walter Zaremba from District 1, Don Wiggins from District 3 and Tom Shepperd, who is running unopposed in District 5, have agreed to take part in the debate. District 2 representative Sheila Noll and District 4 representative George Hrichak will not be making an appearance because they are planning on working in their districts that evening.

All four challengers seeking the Republican nomination have committed to attending: Mitchel Thomas is running for District 1, Frank Barger is looking to gain the seat for District 2, Bob D’Eramo is contending for District 3 and Jim Haas is competing for the District 4 seat.

The Just Cause Foundation is sponsoring the debate, with its director Sid Holloway organizing it. The nonprofit group was created in 2008 to promote a better understanding of government.

Holloway said that his group is not affiliated with the Tuscany Group, who sponsored a debate between the York-Poquoson Commonwealth’s Attorney candidates Eileen Addison and Ben Hahn on June 16.

The Tuscany Group cancelled their forum, which had been planned for the same night, and its leaders encouraged those who usually attend their events to go to the Just Cause-sponsored debate. The core team of the Tuscany Group includes Realtor Greg Garrett and Sheriff Danny Diggs.

Audience members will be given the opportunity to submit their questions to a three-person panel who will decide which questions will go to the moderator. The event, which begins at 7 p.m. in the Grafton Middle School Kiva, will be moderated by Douglas Meade, the former Chairman of the York County Republican Committee.

The Board voted to approve a $640,000.00 fire boat with no idea how much it was going to cost to maintain and or to staff. If just one of them had picked up the phone and called the manufacturer they could have received this information immediately. We need a board who does their homework prior to spending OUR money. And, how can our government which is 14 trillion in debt able to give away $640,000.00 boats. IT'S STILL OUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

We need a new board with common sense willing to take a business approach to Riverwalk Landing as well as the sports complex. Riverwalk Landing was built with no retail study done. Who invests 20 plus million dollars on a project with no retail study. There are empty store fronts down there with no for rent signs in them. If this was run like a business they would be actively trying to lease them. It's not their money so they don't care. The sports complex was built on property that the county doesn't even own. It's time for real change in York County!!

Why didn't any of the current Board Of Supervisors attend the York County Republican Committee meeting this month? And where was Sheila Noll and George Hrichak last night? The citizens of York County deserve a board that cares enough to serve the people of the county. I am excited about the change of leadership about to take place!!!!!!!!!!

Each candidate should be asked to defend the decision to accept a half million dollar grant from the federal government to buy a fire boat when the federal government is more than a trillion dollars in debt. How does this count as fiscal conservatism?

WY Daily
I find your second sentence within your rules interesting..." We expect civil discourse..." As a member of the Tuscany Group, we asked the same thing from our members. One member in particular stated he/she could not oblige, and put into print "I'd stab you in the back while staring you in the eye." Now that person who I will not name continues to cast inferences on others, by name as above. Why single our two members of the Core? Why not include ALL of the names so the community sees the balance or imbalance? WE HAVE BIG ISSUES AS A NATION, with the DEBT being highest in my mind...we are running out of time to right the ship and need to come together as a team...WITH CIVILITY! We are merely vapors, here today, gone tomorrow. Our personal agendas don't matter unless they leave a legacy of disaster for those that follow. Let us FOCUS on what is important. We are fighting the wrong foe.

Actually the Forum in at Grafton Middle School in the Kiva auditorium. Same building and parking areas, you just need to come to the entrance on the right.
