UPDATE: Driver Runs Red Light, One Dead in York Crash

Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal, two-car accident Monday morning in York County.

Police were called to the intersection of Route 17 and Battle Road, near the Yorktown Public Library, around 5:37 a.m. Monday. State Trooper M.L. Schatzel was first on the scene, and discovered one of the drivers was dead.

According to State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya, a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon was making a left turn from westbound Battle onto southbound Route 17 when the driver of a 2002 Ford Econoline ran a red light and struck the Hyundai in the driver's side door. The impact send the Hyundai into the median and ditch. The Hyundai's driver,  38-year-old Christopher P. Kaiser of Yorktown, died on impact. Police said Kaiser was active duty military.

The driver of the Ford, 33-year-old man Jacob Frederick of Gloucester, was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.

Anaya said charges against Frederick are pending review by the York-Poquoson Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.

Very sad news as he seemed to be a nice man and caring dad. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family.
