Minivan Flips, Crashes in James City; Boy Killed

A 13-year-old boy has died after a fatal crash involving a minivan and dump truck Monday night in James City County.

James City Police spokesman Maj. Steve Rubino said police were called to the crash in the 1300 block of John Tyler Highway just after 8 p.m.

A preliminary investigation, Rubino said, has revealed that a 1997 Ford minivan with seven occupants was traveling west on John Tyler Highway (Route 5) when the driver somehow lost control and ran off the road. The van rolled numerous times, then struck a dump truck traveling east on Route 5.

The van's occupants included three adults and four children, ranging in age from two months to 17 years old.

All six surviving occupants were transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News and MCV Hospital in Richmond for treatment of injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to critical.

Rubino said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. The names of those involved have not yet been released.

The accident caused John Tyler Highway to be closed at the James City County/Charles City County line for nearly six hours. The road reopened just before 2 a.m. today.

This is heartbreaking and I'm on pins and needles wondering if the poor child who lost his life is one of my daughter's classmates. The rash of accidents lately should make everyone stop and SLOW DOWN. Where is everyone going in such a hurry? Teenagers especially are running around Williamsburg like they're participating in the Great Race.

Since the family knows what happened, identifying them by name would bring tangible help and support for them sooner.
