WJCC Names Interim Principal at Jamestown

The former principal of Lafayette High School will come out of retirement to serve as interim principal at Jamestown High School for the upcoming school year.

Williamsburg-James City County Superintendent Steven Constantino announced Tuesday that Parker Land, who served as principal at Lafayette from 1996 to 2005, will take the reins at Jamestown. The school’s last principal, Chuck Wagner, left to become Gloucester Public Schools’ assistant superintendent of instruction.

“We are grateful to Mr. Land for agreeing to bring his long and distinguished leadership experience to Jamestown High School to lead it through this transitional period as we search for a permanent principal,” Constantino said in a press release.

After leaving Lafayette High in 2005, Land served as a turnaround specialist for two Richmond-area schools before retiring in 2008. His efforts in Richmond became the subject of a PBS documentary (read about the series here).

Prior to his work at Lafayette, Land served as principal of Norge Elementary, Matthew Whaley Elementary and James Blair Middle School between 1982 and 1996. He also taught alternative education students at Toano Middle in 1992-93, and taught fifth and sixth grades at Bruton Heights Elementary from 1974-79.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in government at the College of William and Mary in 1974 and a master’s degree in education from the college in 1980, specializing in administration and supervision. He has served on numerous education-related committees, including the Community Partnership for Excellence in Education.

The search for a permanent principal at Jamestown will be conducted during the school year.

Lafayette High School is fortunate to have Park Land as its pricipal this year. He is an exceptional educator, truly committed to excellence in education. I hope the parents at LHS will support him in all that he does at the school for their children.
