Former state legislator Phil Hamilton, who represented part of James City County in the 93rd district for 21 years, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Richmond to 9 1/2 years in federal prison after being convicted in May of bribery and extortion.

The charges related to a teacher training center Hamilton, vice chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, helped create at Old Dominion University. The center was funded with $500,000 in taxpayer money, and Hamilton - who worked as an administrator for Newport News Public Schools - was hired as the center's part-time director for $40,000 a year.
