UPDATE: Water Line Break Closes Route 5; Another Break Affects Indigo Dam Road

A water line break on Route 5 at Patriot's Colony has caused Route 5 to be closed to traffic. Residents of neighborhoods west of Patriot's Colony, including Governor's Land, are being asked to use Monticello Road and stay off Route 5 until mIdday, when James City Service Authority workers hope to have the break repaired and the road restored.

According to an email notice sent to Governor's Land residents Monday evening, all water to the community was turned off by the JCSA as they worked to repair the break. Full water service was restored early Tuesday morning.

JCSA General Manager Larry Foster said the Route 5 break appears to be due to the failure of an underlying concrete storm drain.

Foster said another water line break was discovered around 3 a.m. today on Indigo Dam Road, where a repair is now in progress. Foster said he hopes to restore service in the Indigo Dam Road area by 1 p.m. today.

The Indigo Dam Road break occurred about 200 yards from the mid-June failure. Foster said there was no identifiable reason so far, but it was the fourth failure in that span in 24 months.

Foster said he expects to bring forward a proposal to replace the pipe and noted that Henry Branscome Construction has been "very helpful" in responding to the two overnight emergencies.
