Department of Ed Says D.J. Montague Met AYP

Williamsburg-James City County Schools announced Friday that D.J. Montague Elementary School successfully met Adequate Yearly Progress benchmarks, correcting an error that earlier listed the school as failing to meet AYP.

The Virginia Department of Education notified the division Friday that it accepted the division’s objection that an error had been made in how a single student’s ethnicity was classified in WJCC’s database. When AYP results were released earlier this month, the school was listed as failing to meet AYP benchmarks in math, but the school division disputed that conclusion. Read more about the results here.

At the time, VDOE spokesman Charles Pyle said school divisions first receive preliminary data in mid-July and are expected to constantly check the data and report any errors. WJCC Superintendent Steven Constantino said the division did check the data, and was under the impression the most recent numbers had been correct.

“We very much appreciate the DOE’s patience in working with us to locate and correct this error, which means everything to the students, faculty and families of D.J. Montague who have worked so hard to reach this milestone it so deserves,” Constantino said Friday.

So what does a student's ethnicity have to do with academic progress? Ignoring the obvious problem of how ridiculous federal educational mandates are, how does changing a box for one student from one ethnicity to another change how allegedly successful an entire school is or not? It's maddening that the federal government, or ANY government, who uses our tax dollars is basing success on ethnicity. I thought that we had gotten past the idea that different ethnic groups can and should have different academic standards and abilities.
