Due to the effects of Hurricane Irene, businesses, government buildings and other organizations have announced closures for Tuesday. Find updated closure information, by locality, below. The newest closure announcements are listed at the top of each list.
More closure information is coming in all the time to WYDaily, so be sure to check here periodically to get the information you need. WYDaily ran stories on what businesses were open directly after the storm, but there are now so many businesses open WYDaily will now only be sharing information on closures and delays. Williamsburg
- UPDATE noon: Power has been restored to all of Merchants Square.
- William and Mary: All college offices will be open on today. Classes will resume on Wednesday.
Residence halls will reopen to students on Tuesday at noon. If power
is not restored to Brown or Ludwell residence halls, the College is
working to secure alternative temporary housing. If power is not
restored by noon Tuesday, those residents should contact Residence
Life at 757-221-4314 for information about temporary lodging.
- UPDATE 10 a.m.: William and Mary will defer the test of its siren and emergency alert system until Wednesday, Sept. 7. The test was originally scheduled for this Wednesday.
- The City of Williamsburg says WJCC Schools are closed today.
- Busch Gardens will be open, but Water Country USA remains closed.
- The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (CW) including the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum will be open today.
- Selected sites in the Historic Area continue to be available to our guests including all Historic Trades, selected exhibition buildings and the Revolutionary City program among other activities.
- Colonial Williamsburg’s Lodge and restaurant are open and receiving guests.
- CW retail operations including hotel gift shops, Everything Williamsburg, Williamsburg at Home, Celebrations, Colonial Nursery outdoor sales and the Museum Store and Wallace Café are open. Other Hospitality and retail operations will open as power is restored.
- CW shuttle buses are operating the Historic Area route plus service to Busch Gardens and the Historic Triangle Shuttle to Jamestown and Yorktown.
James City County
- UPDATE 10:30 a.m.: Due to travel lane restrictions on Jolly Pond Road, everyone must use Chickahominy Road and Cranstons Mill Pond Road to access the Convenience Center. Emergency officials remind citizens that roads with barricades are closed to ensure drivers’ safety. Do not drive around the barricades.
- UPDATE 9:50 a.m.: The Planning Commission Policy Committee has rescheduled today's meeting to Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. to discuss the Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance Update.
- Jolly Pond Convenience Center will be open today from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for residential vegetative debris only at no charge. Proof of James City County residency is required. No commercial contractors or debris will be accepted. This free disposal will continue until September 16.
- The James City/Williamsburg Community Center pool will reopen today.
- County offices will be open although offices at the County Government Center are still without power and services may not be fully functional. Citizens should call the public inquiry line to find out what County services are available, 564-2140.
York County
- County offices in Historic Yorktown will reopen on time today. This includes the York-Poquoson Courthouse, the County Finance Building, the County Administration Building, and York Hall.
- The Tabb Library will also reopen today. As of yesterday, officials expected that power will be restored to the Yorktown Library by today and if that is the case, the Yorktown Library will be able to open on time as well.
- Most York County parks including the Sports Complex will reopen on Tuesday, Aug. 30. New Quarter Park will remain closed at least through Sept. 6 due to downed trees.
- YCSD employees at Yorktown Elementary, Yorktown Middle, York River Academy, Mt. Vernon Elementary, Magruder Elementary, Queens Lake Middle and Bruton High:
Because these schools do not have power, Tuesday, August 30 will be a work day for only 12-month employees and essential personnel. Teachers only may report, if desired; however, all other staff are not to report to these schools. If power is restored overnight, principals will call staff in the morning with reporting information.
WJCC Schools
- Freshman orientations scheduled for high schools are cancelled for WJCC schools. High school open houses originally scheduled for Tuesday are now tentatively rescheduled for Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. For detailed information on which schools are open and which are closed, and for updates on other activities, visit the WJCC website.
