Special Hurricane Trash Pickups Start Tuesday; Full Details

Hurricane Irene's aftermath includes a lot of extra trash, particularly that from downed trees. Here's a rundown of special pickups and other information for Triangle residents dealing with storm-related debris. Pickups begin Tuesday, September 6.

James City County
Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 5) - Jolly Pond Convenience Center Open; Toano Convenience Center, Closed; Tewning Convenience Center, Closed.

Recycling - Normal schedule

Debris Removal Information

Jolly Pond Convenience Center will be open on Labor Day, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is the only center that takes storm debris in addition to regular trash and recycling materials. No coupons are needed for tree limbs and other vegetative debris until September 16. Proof of James City County residency is required.

Toano Convenience Center reopened Friday and will operate on its regular schedule, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (It will be closed on Labor Day). Tewning Road will open Tuesday, September 6, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will follow normal operating hours.

Jolly Pond Road is open to cars and small trucks only. All other vehicles must use Chickahominy Road and Cranston’s Mill Pond Road to access the Convenience Center.

There are two ways to dispose of hurricane construction debris: self haul to Jolly Pond and use coupons or place by curb for pickup after September 6, no coupons required. Keep construction debris separate from vegetative debris.

Trucks will collect vegetative and storm-related construction materials from Hurricane Irene beginning September 6 on all public streets and private streets in gated communities in the County. There will be two collection passes to all affected areas – on September 6 and a second pickup to be announced at a later time.

All storm-related debris should be placed at the edge of the property line at the curb or shoulder of the road, within 10 feet of the road. Avoid placing in the roadway. Do not cut logs in very short lengths. Logs up to 10 to 12 feet in length are acceptable.

Make sure to avoid piling debris near hanging wires and anything that could be hit or damaged by the truck during collection, such as mail boxes or utility boxes and meters.

Do not mix vegetative and construction debris or it will not be picked up. No hazardous materials will be accepted. Do not burn debris.

Vegetative debris can also be bagged in clear bags no larger than lawn or leaf-size (40 gallons or less).

Williamsburg
The Labor Day holiday will not affect refuse collection and recycling pickups. Trash will be picked up on regular Monday/Tuesday schedule with recycling on Wednesday.

Curbside storm debris removal begins Tuesday, September 6 at 7 a.m.

Place piles away from mailboxes, telephone poles, fences and utility boxes. Debris includes trees and limbs (woody material only). Piles should not exceed 8 feet in length and should be placed parallel with the street. Do not put any trash, plastic, paper, concrete, lumber, metal, glass, or other non-woody material into the piles. Burning is not permitted.

Additionally, the City offers limb and branch pickup each week along with the regular trash pickup. The limbs should be cut in four-foot lengths and tied into bundles not to exceed 50 pounds. The trash truck will pick up 10 bundles on each pickup date.

Please call 757-220-6140 if you have any questions.

York County
York County will begin curbside collection of vegetative debris from Hurricane Irene on Tuesday, September 6. Crews will be working throughout the county, so please make sure your debris is curbside on or before the 6th. Please be patient. While the crews will begin Tuesday, they'll be making their way through the county until all debris is removed. This may take some time.

Below are some tips to remember when placing the debris at the curb to ensure pickup.

* Only vegetative debris will be collected
* Debris MUST be located on the public right-of-way
* Make sure the debris does not block the roadway
* Make sure debris is not under power lines, is away from other trees, other structures, mailboxes, fire hydrants, ditches, manhole covers, water meters, and/or invisible fencing.
* Contractors will pick up all sizes of debris and will also take stumps - please note, stumps will NOT be accepted at the VPPSA drop-off area.

VPPSA Composting Facility
The VPPSA Composting Facility located at 145 Goodwin Neck Road in York County will be open to residents Monday through Saturday, from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. for the delivery of vegetative debris. Please ensure that material is no larger than 10 feet in length and 24 inches in diameter. No tree roots, stumps or dirt will be accepted.

The VPPSA facility is handling over 1,000 vehicles per day, so residents are asked to please work as quickly as possible to unload your vehicle so we can keep the lines down. The staff appreciates it.

Curbside collection of garbage
Now through through Friday, September 9, residents may place additional storm related household waste out with your regular garbage. The following rules apply:

* Collections of extra material are for storm-related household waste only. Please schedule a bulk collection for regular bulky items.
* Material that does not fit in your toter should be bagged. Up to six bags weighing no more than 50 lbs. per bag will be collected.
* Material that does not fit in your toter and is not bagged can be no longer than 3 feet in length.

Note: In order to ensure collection, please make sure your toter and any extra material is placed at the curb prior to 7 a.m. on your regular collection day.

Household hazardous waste/electronics

Residents may bring a variety of household hazardous waste and/or electronics to either of the upcoming scheduled collection events:

York County: Saturday, September 10 from 8 a.m. until noon at the EDS Complex on County Drive (off Goodwin Neck, not at the Waste Management Center), Yorktown

Hampton: Saturday, September 17 from 8 a.m. until noon at the Public Works Operations Complex, 419 N. Armistead Avenue

Please visit www.vppsa.org for a list of accepted materials and additional information.

For additional general information, or if you have questions, please contact the York County Waste Management office at 890-3780.
