Officer Shoots, Wounds Charging Dog

An on-duty Williamsburg police officer on foot patrol shot and wounded a dog around 12:34 a.m. Thursday, after attempting to avoid the charging animal.

The officer was on his way back to his vehicle in a hotel parking lot in the 1800 block of Richmond Road in Williamsburg, when he was charged by an unleashed brown and black pit bull.

According to a press release from the Williamsburg Police Department, the officer tried to avoid the animal, but when the animal was less than an arm’s length away he drew his firearm and fired once, wounding the animal.

The dog was taken by its owner to a veterinarian for care.

The incident is under further investigation by the police department.

It would be foolish to trust the officer's account.

The officer was within his rights, and why was the dog not leashed???

More than one charge should be leveled at the owner.

Not sure why you think it doesn't pass the smell test. So many hotels have been robbed in Wmbg lately. Also most Officers do not want to draw a weapon and shoot. I am sure he felt terrible about wounding the dog. What if it had been a family returning from a late movie - kbar makes a good point - charges should be brought against the owner. You must keep your pets under control.

This doesn't pass the "smell" test.
Officer walking to his car in hotel parking lot; then the dog was taken to the vet by the owner; all this in the middle of the night.
I'd like to see the follow up here.

I hope charges are brought against the owner as well.
