VIDEO: Update on Hurricane Irene Debris Cleanup

grinderWYDaily spoke with Jim Hill, Solid Waste Superintendent for James City County, about the gathering, transportation and grinding operations currently underway in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene at the Warhill Sports Complex. The county expects to process about 300,000 cubic yards of material with these massive machines.

I doubt if there's much oak in the debris, and it is just debris. Horrible tulip poplar are a lot of the "trees". They don't live long so it's no surprise so many went down. It would be hugely expensive to try to sort the few usable pieces from the hundreds of thousands of cubic yards being collected. I'm happy that JCC is doing such a good job with cleaning up the mess.

I wouldn't fret about not having logs or Louisville Sluggers. It looks like they are turning it into mulch. Which is something that can be readily sold and usefully re-purposes the wood.

It is a shame that the lumber cannot be cut into firewood to sell to residents or give away at a discount to those who are in need of assistance. The County could generate some much needed funds and help those in the County who could benefit from the firewood.

It really hurts to see all this beautiful hardwood being hauled off to the chipper. Isn't there some way it could be stacked to be wholesaled to a lumber mill to pay some of the expense of the clearing process

It really hurts to see all that beautiful oak being hauled away to a chipper, along with some hickory and ash (how many Louisville Sluggers are we destroying). Isn't there some way that the best wood could be wholesaled to a lumber mill?
