WJCC Appoints Assistant Principal for Clara Byrd

Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School has a new assistant principal.

Nicole S. Nicholson brings 16 years of experience as an elementary school instructor, principal and director of private schools to the Williamsburg-James City County school. Her appointment was announced Tuesday.

She has most recently served as a second and third grade teacher at Yorktown Elementary School. In the 2010-11 school year, she was voted “Teacher of the Year,” and served as the school’s Improvement Behavior Management chair.

Prior to joining York County School Division, she taught at Orcutt Baptist School in Newport News, Crestwood Elementary and Southside Elementary in Richmond and in Head Start at Aberdeen Elementary School in Hampton.

As an administrator, she served as principal of the Chesterbrook Academy (pre-K and kindergarten) in Richmond, as director of Children’s Services at the YWCA Children’s Center in Richmond and as director of the Treetops Children’s Center in Richmond.

Nicholson holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood psychology from Christopher Newport University and a master’s degree in education, educational leadership and administration from George Washington University.

The name of the school is Clara Byrd Baker Elementary. Although many people refer to it as Clara Byrd, this is not the proper name of the person for whom the school is named.
