Norment Outspent All in Primary

In all the state legislative primaries in August, Sen. Tommy Norment led the pack by far in campaign spending to clinch the Republican nomination for the 3rd District senate seat.

Data compiled by the Virginia Public Access Project shows Norment spent a total of $818,324 through August 31 to beat his rival, Mark Frechette, whose expenses totalled only $4,507.

Norment spent roughly $73 for each of the 11,225 votes that led him to an easy victory. Frechette, in comparison, spent about a dollar on each vote.

When asked why he had spent so much on the race, Norment told WYDaily that he was “sending a message that I was taking nothing for granted,” and his spending was based on several factors, including “having invested 20 years of my life in public service, being the senior legislator in this part of VA, [and] having an employed staff depending on me.”

The biggest spender behind Norment in the primary races was Sen. Adam Ebbin, who spent $746,268 to pick up the Democratic nomination for District 30 in Northern Virginia against two other contenders in a much closer race.

The fact that Sen. Norment spent THAT MUCH money on a State elected office speaks for itself, especially in these economic times. You must make a heck of alot more in that job then the $20+ thousand it pays. Since your motivation is to keep YOUR staff employed, how about giving me a job. I will go out knocking on doors to get your name out there for a heck of alot less than $800+ thousand.

Check the VPAP website. A lot of money we locals gave to a previously moderate Norment has now flowed to the extremist likes of Ken Cuccinelli, Jeff Frederick, and Bob Marshall. Lord have mercy.

Since Tommy was half-redistrict ed out of his old territory, he had to introduce himself to an entirely new set of voters. It's not surprising that it took considerable paid media to do so. A balanced article ought to have pointed that out.

OTOH, if he had NOT been redistricted and HAD spent that kind of money, then it would be rather shocking!

Unfortunately WYDaily went for the shocking headline.

Who says $$ can't buy you a position? But it can't buy you respect, Tommmy. We don't know you and your tangled careers anymore.
