New Traffic Light at Centerville, Longhill Activated Friday

The traffic lights at the newly renovated intersection of Centerville and Longhill roads will be activated Friday.

The signal will be turned on midmorning Friday, and will be activated to flashing yellow on Centerville Road and flashing red on Longhill Road. Motorists traveling on Centerville Road are to yield and then proceed with caution, while traffic on Longhill Road will be required to stop and then proceed with caution.

On Tuesday, the signal will be fully activated to the standard green, yellow and red at both roads.

The intersection improvements have been in the works since 2009. The county contribution to the project came in more than $205,000 over the original $537,000 cost estimate due to utility conflicts, soil undercut requirements and a change in material quantities.

The road improvements were triggered by planned county improvements at the entrance of Freedom Park and traffic studies that indicated some work was needed in the area. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, an engineering study of the area showed the need for the traffic signal.

A new gas station and convenience store, Freedom Market, is currently also under construction at the intersection.
