Lights On Against Crime in York County Tonight

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Department is asking York County homeowners to take a stand against crime by flipping a switch. Tonight is National Night Out in the region, a crime prevention program that asks residents to turn on their porch lights is to promote a police-community partnership, crime prevention and neighborhood camaraderie.

“This is a night that neighbors come out of their residences, leave their porch lights on and celebrate taking a stand against crime,” Deputy Sheriff Shawn Kekoa-Dearhart said in a press release. “This is a time to meet and mingle with your neighbors, build positive relationships and look out for each other.”

Begun in 1981, the program gives neighborhoods the opportunity to build events around National Night Out, from neighborhood block parties to parades, cook-outs, social gatherings, flashlight walks and youth programs.

Sergeant Mark Medford, Deputy Mike Russell and Deputy Shawn Kekoa-Dearhart will be in several of York County's neighborhoods tonight, passing out crime prevention information.

If anyone would like the deputies to stop by their neighborhood tonight, call 757-890-3639 or email shawn.kekoa-dearhart@yorkcounty.gov.

This designation, for a number of years, has been a nice gesture against local crime...BUT, this is 2011! Our national and local societies have drastically changed in the way of crime. Please, we need a working update AGAINST C-R-I-M-E!!!!
