City Police Arrest Juvenile in Robbery

While investigating the daytime armed robbery of a College of William and Mary student that took place Sunday, Oct. 2, Williamsburg police found evidence to arrest a juvenile suspect for a robbery that took place Sept. 30 in the 1200 block of Richmond Road.

Four men robbed a College student at knifepoint around 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of North Henry Street, taking the victim's backpack. While searching for those suspects, city police connected the juvenile suspect to an unreported robbery on Sept. 30.

Police said the victim from the September robbery had his backpack stolen and was assaulted. The victim was not seriously injured during the incident.

The identity of the juvenile suspect is being withheld because of his age.

Police are still looking for the four men responsible for the Oct. 2 robbery. The suspects were between 19 and 25 years old. Two were black and described as wearing either a grey or black hoodie, jeans and sneakers. One black male was described as having short black hair and wearing a grey hoodie, black nylon pants and white sneakers. The fourth suspect, who was white, was described as having dark brown hair, wearing a green jacket with a white stripe, gray jeans and white sneakers.

All four suspects fled on foot in an unknown direction.

I agree their names should be released....if they are old enough to do the crime then they should be old enough to have their names published in the paper. This is a different time from years ago and this law needs to be done away with we have more and more juveniles committing crimes. jmo.

State code prevents the police from releasing the juveniles name. See 2.2.3706

It is time to stop protecting these young thugs by not notifying the public of their crimes and listing their names. At the very least, these criminals should be stripped of their driving license, learners permit, and any other 'right' they think they deserve. Most of them will have their record expunged at age 18. Where is the deterrent for the crime?

I think this is just the beginning of crime on college students. When the law says college students aren't allowed to defend them selves by having a gun, this is going to be repeated several times. They might as well have advertised that Williams and Mary campus is the perfect place if you want to commit a crime because no one is allowed to defend themselves. What ever happened to our rights as Americans? The only ones that have guns at William and Mary are the criminals. What is wrong with that picture?

When people under the age of 18 get arrested for crimes, their names should appear in the newspapers. Maybe some of them will think twice before commiting a crime.

@iCare: not sure you can blame the Gazette. Most of the time police do not release the name of juveniles. when they do it is normally because they are Wanted or because they are charged as an adult. don't assume the gazette is witholding information.

Many of us, in 2011, believe that the name of this arrested perp, no matter the age, be listed publicly.
We respectfully request, also, that the exact Code location and description of that "law's" details concerning a perp's age be described publicly, with our local newspaper doing the assignment.
Even more so, enough of us believe that the news media in reality have taken it upon themselves to make that decision to or not to name a perp because of age. And have been unilaterally doing so for decades? IS THAT TRUE, once and for all, Virginia Gazette?

Williamsburg Police Department is amazing. We that live in this beautiful small community should be grateful and lucky to have such hard working professionals for us. Chief Sloggie and his team should be commended. Thank you for keeping us SAFE 24 hours a day.
