Yorktown Victory Celebration Plans Altered Due to WeatherBy Sam Thrift Tuesday, October 18, 2011 Potentially rainy weather has led the Yorktown Day Association and the National Park Service to change their plans for the victory at Yorktown anniversary celebration tomorrow. The Yorktown Day parade and morning ceremonies at the French Cemetery and French Memorial have been cancelled. The demonstration by the Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps and Commander-in-Chief’s Guard has also been cancelled. The Patriotic Exercises, normally conducted at the Yorktown Victory Monument, will be moved indoors to the Washington Auditorium at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown. The event will begin at 11 in the morning. Parking is limited on the Coast Guard base and shuttle service will be available at 10 a.m. from the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center. The schedule for other activities taking place around Yorktown will be determined by the organizations managing the events. Yorktown Day observance has been held annually since 1947 to mark the 1781 victory of General George Washington. The Yorktown Day Association is composed of 13 heritage organizations that cosponsor Yorktown Day in collaboration with the National Park Service. Anyone who needs more information about the event can call the Colonial National Historical Park at (757) 898-2410 or visit their website. |
