James City County Police arrested a 22-year-old James City County resident Wednesday for possession with intent to distribute and transportation of marijuana after the suspect accepted a package of drugs undercover Tri-Rivers Drug Taskforce Agents delivered.

Darek Monte Canaday was at a home in the 200 block of Jolly Pond Road waiting for 17 pounds of marijuana that was en route through the mail from Texas, according to Major Steve Rubino of the James City Police. Canaday did not live at the residence where the drugs were delivered, but knows the family who lives there. A Newport News Police Department drug interdiction dog found the package at an undisclosed mailing location, which led the police to obtain a warrant and confirm the dog’s indication.

Undercover Tri-Rivers agents delivered the package to the suspect, who took the package into the house, according to Rubino. When Canaday later tried to drive away with the package he was arrested.

The suspect was charged with transporting drugs into Virginia and possession with intent to distribute more than 5 pounds of marijuana.

“In the grand scheme of things it’s not a huge amount, but it is significant,” Rubino said. “People don’t have 17 pounds of marijuana laying around for personal use.”

According to Rubino, the street value for the drugs Canaday had in his possession totaled $76,160.

Canaday is being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail without bond. His next day in court is Nov. 1.

Entrapment? The Police did not send the drugs to him.

I grew up with Darek all throughout school and football. He is an amazing kid who has a big heart. It sucks seeing the people you care about hurting themselves. Especially when he leaves behind his little girl. It's a shame how law enforcement entrap people. They provided the oppurtunity to break the law. Let's just leave a cookie in front of a child right after you say he or she isn't allowed to eat cookies.

Alcohol is legal. Marijuana is not. If you break the law and get caught, you get arrested. The end.

While I sincerely doubt this man was an upstanding citizen/good person/what have you, there is nothing to indicate that he really deserved arrest, other than that he broke an extremely stupid law. If these goods were taxed at the normal 5% sales tax rate, it would have raised 3800 dollars for the county. Cigarettes are taxed per cigarette, but taxes (appear - I'm a non-smoker, so correct me if I'm mistaken) to make up more than half the cost of the product, so perhaps the county could have raised as much as 40,000 in taxes if they made it legal for this man to conduct business.

This is a stupid waste of our time and resources and it needs to stop. Alcohol is not only readily available, but is both more addictive and more dangerous, and yet we allow people to choose for themselves whether or not they drink.
