Protesters Plan to Occupy Williamsburg

Protesters will take to the streets of Williamsburg on Saturday to stand in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement that started more than one month ago in New York City.

Occupy Williamsburg is using social media, such as its Facebook page, to organize demonstrators at noon Saturday on Confusion Corner and the Wren Yard at the College of William and Mary.

Organizers have stressed the event is intended to be a peaceful, respectful protest. At the meeting, the group plans to discuss whether there is interest in holding a long-term occupation and/or a march.

Since Sept. 17, demonstrators have encamped in New York’s Zuccotti Park in the Wall Street financial district, primarily to protest inequality, corporate greed and the influence of corporations on government. Participants have adopted the slogan, “We are the 99 percent” in reference to the difference in wealth between the top 1 percent and the rest of the United States.

Within the past two weeks, the message has spread and similar demonstrations have popped up in communities across the U.S. The protests’ goals have varied in media reports, but Adbusters, a group that served as the primary organizer for the demonstrations, has said it demands President Barack Obama “ordain a Presidential Commission tasked with ending the influence money has over our representatives in Washington,” according to its announcement of the plan to occupy Wall Street. In the month that’s passed, organizers have been trying to get participants to vote on a list of grievances, and a “99 percent Declaration” has indicated an intention to convene on July 4, 2012 to form a National General Assembly tasked with creating a nonpartisan independent political party.

The Occupy Williamsburg event will be documented on its Twitter page and its Facebook page.

@Lisa, Williamsburg held peaceful protests to show solidarity with Occupy Wall Street and a place for like minded people tyo discuss grievances. From what i can see the guy who started the FB page is not associated with Anonymous but liked the quote. Do Not Forgive means that people on Wall St cant get away with corporate greed any longer. Anonymous is someone online trying to stir the pot,and initial support of OWS. I find it a little strange honestly. Williamsburg is a quiet town but I met some amazing people who would love to meet regularly to show support, but just arent in a position to camp out. (I'm way past those days, lol) tweet me at @blueintheburg and we can connect.

This is the FINAL WORD! The intersection [meeting] of Richmond Road and Jamestown Road was known for decades as "Jockey Corner". This was because all of the "jocks" [male athletes]used to sit upon the brick walls that surrounded the College Yard to ogle the coeds on their way to the PO [Post Office]. At that time all of the women's dorms were located along Jamestown Road and the PO was located in the building now occupied by the Trelis Restaurant.

@MaryC - not in your back yard????

Do you personally know anyone who was at the protest yesterday? Do you know why we were there? It doesn't seem like it.

I am in my mid-40s, have a family, a full-time job (as does my spouse), I volunteer at my children's school and am on the board of directors for several local organizations. I am proud of what i have "archived" (did you mean achieved?). However, there are still changes which can, and should be made which would make life more equitable for the majority of people in this country.

Unfortunately, working hard does not necessarily equate reward.

Maybe the guy that preaches in front of the Cheese Shop can join forces with the Occupy Williamsburg Group. The tourists will flee in droves. Less tourist = less jobs in Williamsburg. Doesn't that defeat the purpose? Take your demonstrations to 1500 Pennsylvania Ave.

It has taken the Wall Street incident to reestablish Confusion Corner at Jamestown Road/Richmond Road/Boundary Road.

Maybe we need a protest at that very spot. Old timers on one corner, believers on the other corner, and the confused tourist drivers confused when to drive into the mess. :-*

Blue in the Burg and other Occupiers, the Occupy Williamsburg FB page aligns your group with "Anonymous" saying: "We are the Occupy Williamsburg solidarity movement. As Anonymous says, "We are all Legion. We are all Anonymous. We do not forget. We never forgive. Expect us." We are looking to organize our first solidarity event. Also if anyone has skills building a website please let me know!" Why? How is this group, Anonymous, doing any good and why do you choose to associate with it? What does 'we do not forgive' mean?

@TheRealWren - I agree totally with you! Except, that is not what is happening. These people are not "petitioning government for redress of grievances", They are illegally occupying "Wall Street" not Pennsylvania Ave! They have by far overstayed their welcome and have certainly NOT protested in a "peaceful manner!"

Time for them to move on! If they want their change, they should look to November rather than breaking the laws of the land!

"C-O-N-F-U-S-I- O-N CORNER"? Time, once-and-for-al l, to correctly share the historic TRUTH with you, THE last word.
A) Hey, town residents, for those one or two old-timers still living way back in our past & continuing to refer to "confusion corner #1" as the VERY OLD one at the intersection of Lafayette, York & Page, they are historically WRONG! That "confusion corner" was solved long ago with a...STOPLIGHT! Check it out, please.
B) Decades ago, when our town was much 'smaller' & our traffic was still manageable, that 'corner' at Jamestown & Richmond roads was known as "college corner" because the male students liked to 'hang' there! NO longer....
C) So, newer residents, times have changed, drastically! Go observe, PLEASE, & learn.
D) CHAOS...DISORGA NIZATION...hmmm m, CONFUSION!
E) And WHO is responsible? Our city council, ultimately, along with our city manager. There is NO plan to solve the "confusion", and that's been that way for years. WHY? Our town leaders don't want to disrupt, uh, the 'historic ambiance' at that point.
F) Conclusion? Next time you hear one or two declare that Jamestown & Richmond roads is not our "confusion corner"? Be polite & share your new truth. Oh, please speak out & up about our town government finally getting involved, now, & SOLVING our absolute MOST "confused corner!" Thanks.....

there are some pretty inflammatory and misinformed comments on this post on the event today.(but thank you for covering it!!) Sad when people have an impression without even attending or talking with us. I am over 40, not a hippy, and dont want a handout. Come down and ask us why we were there. We'd love a good debate.

I think you mean the protest will be at College Corner? Confusion Corner is at the other end of town.
