UPDATE: WM Film Class Seeks Extras for 'SouthEast Side Story'By Amber Lester Kennedy Tuesday, October 25, 2011
That’s the vision of William and Mary Professor Timothy Barnard and the students of his film festival production class. Next Saturday, Nov. 5, they’ll film “SouthEast Side Story: A Williamsburg Community Musical,” with cameos from community and college leaders, including Haulman and Sedeghian. The “lip-dub” project will be a spoof of “West Side Story,” with residents and college students standing in place of the “Jets” and the “Sharks.” The story is intended to communicate the aspiration of the 2012 William & Mary Global Film Festival: to unite the community through film. The project was originally set for filming this Saturday, but has been pushed back a week because of possible inclement weather. Starting at 11 a.m. Nov. 5, the crew will begin filming the segments that will eventually become a three-minute film. The project was inspired by a video created by a nonprofit in Grand Rapids. In the video, people filled the streets to lip-sync Don McLean’s “American Pie.” The production of “SouthEast Side Story” will be similar; the makeshift cast will lip-sync popular songs from the musical, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its film debut. Barnard’s students are working this week to get the word out to as many people as possible, in hopes of filling the 400-seat Kimball Theater with people ready to lip-sync. They hope the filming, which will end at 2 p.m., will attract individuals and community groups, businesses and organizations from throughout the city. The final film will launch online after premiering at a 50th anniversary screening of “West Side Story” at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12. Tickets for the pre-screening party and film are $5. The effort serves to market the college’s Global Film Festival, which will take place Feb. 16-19 at the Kimball Theater. This year, the festival’s theme is “Film and the City”; Barnard said “SouthEast Side Story” serves to depict the host city – Williamsburg. The festival will feature films about cities around the world, live performances, receptions and presentations by invited filmmakers. After much reflection today (Oct. 25), we came to the decision to postpone the production one week (and one hour) due to a convergence of bad news on weather and good news about availability of community leaders a week later. We are very sorry to make this change right after sending out our press release
