WJCC Earns 'Green' Division Status

Williamsburg-James City County Schools are among 37 public school divisions in the state to earn “certified green school division” status from the Virginia School Board Association.

WJCC participated in the VSBA’s “Green Public Schools Challenge,” a competition that encourages implementation of environmental policies and practical actions to reduce carbon emissions generated by the school division and community. The green practices also save the school divisions money; WJCC’s two-year-old energy-saving program has saved approximately $1.2 million.

The challenge rates the school division on energy efficiency, “green” buildings, waste management, vehicle usage, indoor environmental quality, employee incentives, education and community participation, student involvement and innovation. WJCC scored 135 out of 200 possible points, earning a Silver Level status.

“This recognition acknowledges that WJCC ‘s ‘green’ initiatives are a model for other school divisions,” said Superintendent Steve Constantino. “Not only are we helping our environment and our bottom line, we are demonstrating to our students how to be good stewards of the world they live in.”

While we are moving in the right direction, I hope WJCC moves more aggressively to promote vermicomposting in classrooms - it can reduce 100 lbs of food waste trash per class in a year once the bins mature. Larger scale (cafeteria size volume) would be tricker but the children can then demonstrate it at home and make this impact even bigger!

Really, $1.2 million? Sounds great, but I'd love to see the underlying numbers. Does this include capital costs or is it just raw fuel costs? Those geothermal systems are quite expensive to install.

Cngratulations to the WJCC School Board for properly discerning the need to hire consultants to help us save taxpayer dollars - and the environment at the same time. Great job WJCC School Board!
