Some New Businesses Slated for Courthouse Commons

court_commons
Initial elevations of one of the two buildings to be constructed soon at Courthouse Commons.

Courthouse Commons is growing, with four new businesses opening near the new anchor, the Fresh Market, and construction about to begin on two new buildings.

Last weekend, HoneyBee Frozen Yogurt and Smoothies opened in the new shopping center. Atir Natural Nail Care, which used to be in Colony Square Shopping Center near the previous Fresh Market location, will be moving into Courthouse Commons soon, as will the Williamsburg Center for Dental Health. A new dry cleaner will also open soon.

Courthouse Commons Developer Chris Henderson says the shops in the first building are all leased save one, and he expects to break ground on two new buildings this month.

"We have been thrilled by the response from the community on this project," Henderson says. "It is universally accepted as a high-quality development, and there is interest by both local and national businesses... we think we have a really good mix [of businesses]."

Henderson wasn't ready to comment on what businesses he expects will locate in the two new buildings that are currently under review by the county, but he did say there are "committments in place for all the space." The buildings will be roughly 6,500 square feet each.

Beyond just the current structure that houses Fresh Market, the application for the center originally submitted to the county includes up to four buildings, which could include a drive-thru restaurant, drug store, or office space.

The Fresh Market opened July 20 this year, and Henderson says it is doing very well and "exceeding expectiations."

For the record...i drove by the extended "green" Williamsburg Pottery buildings along Richmond Road. Can anyone please tell us how we, locally, can support those many more NEW businesses to come? Oh, what will those businesses be? Will we have more nail salons? Enough of us are 'pondering' in our town and our county...

Let me guess....a Starbucks drive thru. I SAY NO MORE. If this is the case I will patronize Harbour even if its down the road a piece. Why? The coffee is made right here in James City and while Starbucks will employ local people, locally OWNED businesses like Harbour have families in ownership. WBG better take note of its apparent insatiable appetite for the corporate world before the fine locals say goodbye.

Great news for Courthouse Commons; for Colony Square, not so much. Another empty shopping center and more blight on the way.

To "To Patriot":
Thank you for saying what I've been thinking for the past few weeks while looking at various articles on here. I've never met Chris Henderson personally, but if there are so many people that are this desperate to keep a businessman from succeeding, then he must be doing something either very, very good or very, very bad. Looking at even the rabid accusations for a moment, we find that Mr. Henderson seems to be:

--A successful businessman who seems to know what local small businessmen want in developments.

--A man who supports local candidates for office, and (obviously) supports the candidates of the party which is actually supportive of small business.

What exactly is so wrong about either of those two things? A simple look at the current slate of Republican v. Democratic Board of Supervisor candidates is very revealing of how pro-or-anti business they are.

Stonehouse District:
James Kennedy (R)-owns a restaurant-businessman.

Berkeley District:
Mary Jones (R)-owns a store-businesswoman.

Carlton Stockton (D)-variety of boards on universities, banks, and government levels-NOT a businessman.

Roberts District:
Jack Fraley (R)-retired from a business that he founded-businessman.

John McGlennon (D)-Professor at the College of William and Mary-NOT a businessman.

Commisioner of Revenue:
Bruce Goodson (R)-small businessman.

Richard Bradshaw (D)-worked in local government staff before being elected. NOT a businessman.

Does the distinction start to make a bit more sense now? The Republicans who are running for local office are without exception small businessmen. The Democrats running are again without exception NOT small businessmen. With whom would you think a successful businessman would feel more at home?

For that matter, even the GA races show that Republicans are business-friend ly, while Democrats are in general not. Mickey Chohany (R)-restauranteur.
John Miller (D)-board member of Orion Air, a position that he helped to fund while in Richmond.
Mike Watson (R)-self-made small businessman.
Robin Abbott (D)-lawyer.

Is it clear why a businessman would look to people with business experience as their representatives ?

Given its troublesome parking lot configuration, its cannibalization of other shopping areas, and its over-abundant GOP political signs, I'll not patronize this facility AT ALL.

Good, don't. It's much more enjoyable shopping without the misanthrope. The new Fresh Market is a pleasure and I shop there more now that it is convenient.

GOOD!!!!! I don't even know Mr. Henderson personally, but I am tired of the same "Anti-Chris Henderson" comments by you ALL THE TIME. Enough already. Obviously, people are enjoying the new development and it was the tenant's choice to move there. Too bad for their former landlords and great for their new landlord at Courthouse Commons. That's American Free Enterprise at work for you. ENOUGH!!

Henderson's financial support of Jones, Goodson, and Kennedy prior to County review and approval of this particular project is troublesome. And then he was given a seat on the Planning Commission from which he soon had to resign! The entire matter is deplorable and an example of extremely poor leadership, cronyism, and bribery. I'll not patronize this center, either.
