VIDEO: At Home with a Backyard Chicken-Keeper

The York County Planning Commission meets tonight and will pick up the question of whether to recommend changes to the zoning ordinance that could affect backyard chicken-keeping, along with aquaculture and agriculture. WYDaily recently stopped by a county resident's home to see how chickens get along in the neighborhood and explain the proposed changes being discussed.

I think the video is informative and well edited. It is succinct in explaining the issue. It also integrates footage from the board of supervisors meeting well with an actual chicken keeper engaging with her chickens and shows how backyard chicken keeping is a small community pastime; not some huge commercial venture.
I think showing chickens eating from under a rock slab and enjoying the compost pile also provides a means for viewers to see how they are beneficial to keeping yards bug-free.
Chickens are more than pets, they provide valuable nourishment in the eggs they lay and they are a natural way to control yard insects and boost soil fertility. Great job, Sam and Carol!
