Ft. Eustis Blvd. Traffic Pattern Shifts MondayBy WYDaily Staff Sunday, November 13, 2011 As work continues on the Fort Eustis Boulevard widening project in Newport News and York County, motorists should be alert for a new traffic pattern that will move eastbound traffic into the newly constructed eastbound lanes. On Monday, November 14, after the morning peak travel period at approximately 9 a.m., crews will shift eastbound traffic on Fort Eustis Boulevard to the new eastbound lanes and westbound traffic will continue to travel in the westbound lanes. During construction of the eastbound lanes, the westbound lanes carried bi-directional traffic. The inside lane in both directions will remain closed to enable crews to work in the median, place surface asphalt and perform miscellaneous work, including installation of the right-of-way fence on Fort Eustis Boulevard. This traffic pattern is expected to be in place for approximately three weeks, weather conditions permitting. Motorists are advised to continue to practice caution when traveling in the construction area. When making a left turn onto Fort Eustis Boulevard from Woodside Lane, Clubhouse Way or other side streets, be alert to Fort Eustis Boulevard traffic attempting access to the open east or westbound lanes. Temporary signs and striping will be in place to assist with the traffic pattern. Variable message boards have been placed at the construction site this weekend to alert motorists of Monday's traffic shift. The Fort Eustis Boulevard widening project between Jefferson Avenue (Route 143) in Newport News and George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17) in York County has been underway since late 2009 and is scheduled for completion in spring 2012. The project includes widening Fort Eustis Boulevard from two lanes to four and construction of a raised median, turn lanes and traffic signal modifications.
