Virginia State Police arrested a Poquoson police officer Thursday for the rape and sexual assault of a minor after they were contacted by Social Services last month to conduct an investigation.

It was reported to the Department of Social Service Oct. 4 that 29-year-old Steven McGee, who has been employed by the City of Poquoson for three years as a police officer, raped a female juvenile, according to a press release from the Virginia State Police. The victim described the details of her abuse when she was interviewed by a nurse at Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Norfolk.

According to the press release, the victim was able to describe in detail several occasions when and where the rapes had occurred. Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police said the crimes occurred over a period of time in Poquoson, but when it happened and for how long is still under investigation.

The victim's name will not be released because of her age and the nature of the crime, Anaya said. McGee is being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

The state police characterized McGee as a Poquoson police officer, but Poquoson Police Chief Clifford Bowen said in a press release today that McGee is no longer employed by the agency.

Bowen said the department would not be commenting on any aspect of the arrest, investigation or McGee's employment with the city.

“All other information regarding Steven McGee's employment status is considered a personnel matter and the police department will have no further comment regarding his status or any internal investigation conducted by the department,” Bowen said in the press release.
