Chamber Asks Members to Define 'Quality of Life'

The Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance wants to know how its business owners view their “quality of life.”

The chamber has launched a survey of four questions, plus some seeking demographic data, intended to help planners in the Historic Triangle as they begin the process to revise their Comprehensive Plans in 2012. For the first time, the city of Williamsburg, James City County and York County will be updating their plans at the same time and are comparing notes to make sure those plans reflect a shared regional vision.

The chamber aims to pin down what its members believe is important to have a good quality of life through the survey. Survey takers are asked to rank the relative importance of 14 indicators of quality of life, such as a diverse community or a sustainable economy.

“When issues are discussed before local governing bodies, ‘quality of life’ is often the argument made by both those in favor of and those against specific economic actions. Ask any two people and they will likely define ‘quality of life’ differently,” said the Chamber in a press release.

Good idea. These businesses also need to ask themselves if they are promoting community quality of life through good customer service and respect for the community (as many, but not all, do well.)

GOod idea. These businesses need to include, their own commitment to customer service and respect for the good of the community (as many - but not all - of them do well.)

The first question asks members to rank the level of importance of 14 indicators of quality of life, from 1 (least important) to 10 (most important). The second question asks them to choose three of the indicators as most important and three as least important. The third question asks takers to rate, from 1 to 10, the quality of life in Williamsburg. The final question asks which three of the 14 indicators are most in need of improvement.

The 14 indicators are: Housing options that enable people of diverse incomes to live and work in the community; schools that are effective environments for teaching and learning and which encourage parental development; low crime rates and commitment to public safety; local governments that value regional cooperation; efficient and effective public services, including transportation; parks, open space and recreational facilities for all residents; healthy business sector with a strong and diverse employment base; a sustainable economy that supports an attractive cost of living; unique characteristics and institutions that are valued and protected; a range of cultural, educational and arts-related programs, facilities; a tradition of volunteerism and philanthropy; access to shopping and dining; a culture of wellness with access to healthcare; and a population balanced by age and characterized by diversity.

An important question that needs to be clarified. Like 'Character'. New town is turning Ironbound into a 4 lane highway, and monticello into stop light alley. Some like it, some not, but it is important to understand the goal so we can get there.

How about peace and quiet instead of heavy traffic racing up and down Victory Blvd. - stars shining at night instead of shopping center reflected light,

Ms. Kennedy,

Please publish the Alliance's questions. They might frame the issue for all of us.
