Pottery to Close for Final Construction Phase

This rendering shows what the Pottery will look like when construction is complete. The Pottery is moving into the final phase of construction next week.
The Williamsburg Pottery will close its doors after 6 p.m. on Nov. 26 for the next phase of its revitalization and construction project.

The 73-year-old shopping center will close to the public on Nov. 27 (it will also be closed on Thanksgiving), but will offer up to 90 percent off holiday décor and gifts starting Nov. 23 in Building 21.

The Building 21 sale includes holiday decorations, bed and bath accessories, home accents, table lamps, baskets and country store items. The Solar Building is also open and offering a sale of 30 percent off.

“As many drivers of Route 60 see daily, our ‘new’ Pottery’s $30 million revitalization and construction project along Richmond Road is proceeding on schedule,” said Peter Kao, executive vice president of Williamsburg Pottery, in a press release. “We are now preparing for the last stage of our transformation. Both our staff and our contractors are focused on finishing our exterior construction, parking and plazas; installing interior décor and fixtures; and providing a dynamic range of unique merchandise, artisan services and new level of customer amenities and hospitality.”

The Pottery broke ground on its revitalization project in December 2010. The Dutch-inspired market will have nearly 147,000 square feet of retail space spread over 19 acres, featuring garden nursery items, ceramics, custom framing, floral arrangements and imported goods, along with a cafe and deli, fountains, gardens and a performance stage. Kao said the project is on target to celebrate its grand opening on April 5.

I agree about the workers I have shopped at the Pottery for over 50 years-- but if the workers are not being taken care of during the closure, I will sever my ties.....

Local yocal: The WP has not been successful for the last 10 years BECAUSE of its ragtag buildings. As nicer and newer places opened down the road WP has slid downhill.

It's folks like you who want everything to stay the same while the business loses marketshare and goes bankrupt.

Thank goodness the current owners are willing to invest in future customers not past local yocals'.

The Pottery has been successful for so many years because of its many ragtag buildings and flea market look. Obviously, there was little overhead and tourists assumed the prices were low. With this new look, I fear that it will be seen as just another tourist trap with high priced junk. It is a beautiful build out, but there will be nothing to set it aside from the other `outlet malls' in the area. The Pottery is synonymous with Williamsburg. It would be a shame if it went by the wayside because it is no different from any other shopping outlet.

And what about all of those Pottery employees, from now through Christmas to April? Will they, with families, be paid every week until April 5th?
Many of us locals care about them!
