A Moment of Silence to Mark Pearl Harbor

Naval Weapons Station Yorktown will pause for a moment of silence followed by eight bells and taps at 12:55 p.m. today in honor of the more than 2,300 men and women who died in the attack at Pearl Harbor.

On the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the American Army and Navy base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack came as a surprise to the American Army and Navy and led to great losses. In addition to the loss of life, more than 20 ships and 400 aircraft were destroyed or heavily damaged. The day after the attack, the United States declared war on Japan and entered World War II.

According to a press release, eight bells and taps will be broadcast through the “Giant Voice” broadcast system and will be heard all across the installation and into the surrounding communities. Naval Weapons Station Yorktown invites the community to join in the moment of silence to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the attack.

I was 8 years old when people were running up and down the street yelling of the bombing. I remember saying "What is Pearl Harbor"! I learned quickly when relatives had to service. To all our brave military personnel THANKS!

"Lest We Forget" is the battle cry for December 7.

My father, RC Everett was serving on the USS California on the morning of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Dad was 20 years old and on kitchen duty.

The crew got a "call to arms," and with the electricity out, began a "bucket brigade" to get the ammunition from the bottom of the deck to the top. Then came the call to abandon ship.

Dad was a strong swimmer and made it effortlessly to Ford Island. Many of his shipmates, were not so fortunate.

Dad once said he learned on that day that God answers all prayers; He just might not answer them the way you expect.

May God bless our veterans; and may God bless American again.
