Fire Department Investigates Odor at Berkeley MiddleBy Amber Lester Kennedy Tuesday, December 13, 2011 Berkeley Middle School students in 10 classrooms were temporarily evacuated this morning, due to a strong odor in a nearby bathroom. Around 8:20 a.m., the school called the Williamsburg Fire Department to investigate a liquid in one of the bathrooms that was emitting a strong odor. Fire Department Spokesman Eric Stone said the liquid did not smell like or seem to be sewage, but the investigation is ongoing. The fire department personnel closed off the bathroom area and, as a precaution, moved students to the gymnasium while they investigated, Stone said. A state hazardous materials officer took samples of the liquid and determined it was nonhazardous. A sniffing dog also walked through the school to make sure the liquid wasn’t present in any other location. The school day will proceed as planned, but the school division did alert parents and give them the option to pick up students before dismissal at 3 p.m. The school division’s operations staff cleaned the bathroom, with advice from the hazardous materials officer, Stone said.
