The Williamsburg-based National Center for State Courts partnered with the College of William and Mary to establish the Linda R. Caviness International Student Internship.

Through the Office of International Students, Scholars and Programs, the first intern will be selected in spring 2012 and begin the internship in the following fall. The internship is named for Caviness, who will retire on Dec. 31 after 33 years at the NCSC, a nonprofit court reform organization dedicating to improving the administration of justice.

The intern will be recruited annually by the NCSC from a pool of undergraduate international students studying at William and Mary. The interns will get first-hand experience working within the American court system and with nonprofit organizations through the NCSC.

Steve Sechrist, director of the Office of Students, Scholars and Programs at the Reves Center for International Studies, said the internship will meet a “demonstrated need among our international student community.” “Providing opportunities for meaningful co-curricular experiences is critical to the college’s mission of preparing our students to be global leaders,” he said.

Caviness joined the NCSC in 1978 as a staff associate and has since held positions in several NCSC divisions. As Executive Director of NCSC’s International Programs, she oversaw projects in Egypt, El Salvador, Argentina, Honduras, Serbia, Croatia and other emerging democracies working to establish the rule of law.
