In the end, a last-minute effort that resonated for so many of us who wish we could sing but cannot (or can sing but are surrounded by our beloved friends and family who cannot) was the winner in the Third Annual WYDaily-Tide Radio-BACHfm holiday haiku competition.
Ellen Womeldorf captured that facet of the season perfectly in her 17-syllable effort:
We Christmas carol,
Sing out, sing loud, sounding great,
Please lip sync Mommy.
Congratulations to Ellen, who has won a massage from Victoria's Day Spa in Yorktown.
Ellen had some stiff competition. Our runners-up included another homage to mom's shortcomings, the reality that fun sometimes can turn to discord when families gather, the ever-popular tip to holiday cocktails and lots more.

And because judging these matters is an entirely subjective enterprise, we offer the best of the rest, along with our wishes for a wonderful holiday season for all - and by "holiday" we mean them all. Yes, that includes every birthday for every soul born during the last week of December.

Holidays excite.
Decorate, shop, cook, party.
Embrace the spirit.
Someone's gonna cry.
Can't keep your group all smiling.
Happens every year.
Silver, red, green, gold,
Sparkling lights glimmer on trees.
All we need is snow.
My brother's gone now.
Holidays forever changed.
Memories treasured.
